Currently, the widely used notion of activity is increasingly present in computer science. However, because this notion is used in specific contexts, it becomes vague. Here, the notion of activity is scrutinized in various contexts and, accordingly, put in perspective. It is discussed through four scientific disciplines: computer science, biology, economics, and epistemology. The definition of activity usually used in simulation is extended to new qualitative and quantitative definitions. In computer science, biology and economics disciplines, the new simulation activity definition (...) is first applied critically. Then, activity is discussed generally. In epistemology, activity is discussed, in a prospective way, as a possible framework in models of human beliefs and knowledge. (shrink)

This paper focuses on extant approaches to counteract the consumption of fake news online. Proponents of structural approaches suggest that our proneness to consuming fake news could only be reduced by reshaping the architecture of online environments. Proponents of educational approaches suggest that fake news consumers should be empowered to improve their epistemic agency. In this paper, we address a question that is relevant to this debate: namely, whether fake news consumers commit mistakes for which they can be criticized and (...) that they could easily avoid by reforming their doxastic conduct. Proponents of structural approaches, like R. Rini and B. Millar, have defended in different ways a negative answer to this question. In this paper, we criticize their views and suggest that individual users could improve on their epistemic practice by widening their information diet. (shrink)

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, procrastination has become commonplace due to changes in teaching and learning, which trigger students' academic burnout. As a result, it has increased the intensity of procrastination among students who are enrolled in online learning programs. As a result, students have difficulty as a result of the rapid change from in-person learning to online learning. The study investigates the relationship between academic burnout and procrastination among 150 grade 12 senior high school students. Hence, this study employed (...) a correlational design. Based on the inferential analysis, the r coefficient of 0.71 indicates a high positive correlation between the variables. The p-value of 0.00, which is less than 0.05, leads to the decision to reject the null hypothesis. Hence, a significant relationship exists between academic burnout and academic procrastination among grade 12 senior high school students. (shrink)

Maimonides’ Latin translation of Moreh Nevukhim | Guide for the Perplexed, was the most influential Jewish work in the last millennia (Di Segni, 2019; Rubio, 2006; Wohlman, 1988, 1995; Kohler, 2017). It marked the beginning of scholasticism, a daughter of Judaism raised by Jewish thinkers, according to historian Heinrich Graetz (Geschichte der Juden, L. 6, Leipzig 1861, p. xii). Printed by Gutenberg's first mechanical press, its influence in the West went as far as the Fifth Lateran Council (1512 — 1517) (...) "where scholars were encouraged to remove the difficulties which seemed to divide the whole of theology and philosophy (Leibniz, Théodicée, 11)." For centuries, the Guide revolutionized the curriculum of school instruction by reintegrating the natural laws of thought in the sphere of faith (the fourth of which became Leibniz’ Principle of sufficient reason). In this chapter, I argue that one can articulate a historically attuned and analytically rich model for understanding jazz in its various inflections. That is, on the one hand, such a model permits us to affirm jazz as a historically conditioned, dynamic hybridity. On the other hand, to acknowledge jazz’s open and multiple character in no way negates our ability to identify discernible features of various styles and aesthetic traditions. Additionally, my model affirms the sociopolitical, legal (Jim Crow and copyright (...) laws), and economic structures that shaped jazz. Consequently, my articulation of bebop as an inflection of Afromodernism highlights the sociopolitical, and highly racialized context in which this music was created. Without a recognition of the sociopolitical import of bebop, one’s understanding of the music is impoverished, as one fails to grasp the strategic uses to which the music and discourses about the music were put. A partir do século XIX, a teoria democrática foi desenvolvida com base no confronto entre duas doutrinas políticas: o liberalismo e o socialismo. O liberalismo é um projeto que defende as limitações dos poderes governamentais, buscando a proteção dos direitos econômicos, políticos, religiosos e intelectuais dos membros da sociedade. Ou seja, para os liberais o poder do Estado deve ser limitado, pois eles acreditam que a verdadeira liberdade depende da menor interferência possível do Estado e das leis nesses direitos. A (...) defesa do liberalismo tem como principal representante Benjamin Constant. Membro da Assembleia Nacional Francesa, escreveu a obra A liberdade dos antigos comparada com a dos modernos, na qual afirma que a liberdade dos modernos, que deve ser promovida e desenvolvida, é a liberdade individual na relação com o Estado (ou seja, as liberdades civis e políticas), enquanto a liberdade dos antigos, que se tornou impraticável, é a liberdade de participação direta na formação das leis.1 Outros autores como, como o francês Alexis de Tocqueville2 e o inglês John Stuart Mill3 , defenderam a ideia de que a única estrutura democrática compatível com o Estado liberal seria a democracia representativa. Uma passagem interessante para o nosso debate sobre a democracia é o princípio do dano, de Stuart Mill. Por esse princípio, cada indivíduo tem o direito de agir como quiser desde que suas ações não prejudiquem outras pessoas. Se a ação afeta diretamente apenas a pessoa que a está realizando, a sociedade em tese não tem o direito de intervir, mesmo que o indivíduo esteja prejudicando a si próprio. Contudo, se os indivíduos fizerem algo ruim para si mesmos ou para sua propriedade podem indiretamente prejudicar a coletividade, já que ninguém vive isolado, devendo por isso ser impedidos de fazê-lo. Stuart Mill isenta desse princípio aqueles que são incapazes de se governar. Em síntese, todo o processo de democratização, como se deu nos Estados liberais democráticos, consiste numa transformação mais quantitativa do que qualitativa do regime representativo. Ou seja, o avanço da democracia nesses regimes ocorre em duas direções: no alargamento gradual do direito do voto e na multiplicação dos órgãos representativos. Para a doutrina socialista, o sufrágio universal é apenas o ponto inicial do processo de democratização do Estado, enquanto para o liberalismo é o ponto de chegada. Alguns dos principais teóricos do socialismo, como Antonio Gramsci4 e Rosa Luxemburgo5 , afirmam que o aprofundamento do processo de democratização na perspectiva das doutrinas socialistas ocorre de dois modos: por meio da crítica à democracia representativa (e da retomada de alguns temas da democracia direta) e pela ampliação da da participação popular e do controle do poder por meio dos chamados “conselhos operários”. Em outras palavras, a diferença crucial entre a democracia dos conselhos e a democracia parlamentar é que a primeira reconhece ter havido um deslocamento dos centros de poder dos órgãos tradicionais do Estado para a grande empresa, na sociedade capitalista. Por isso, o controle que o cidadão pode exercer por meio dos canais tradicionais da democracia política não é suficiente para impedir os abusos de poder. Logo, o controle deve acontecer nos próprios lugares de produção, e seu protagonista é o trabalhador real, não o cidadão abstrato da democracia formal. Mais recentemente, na metade do século XX, surgiu a corrente pluralista. Os pluralistas, em particular Robert Dahl6 , cientista político estadunidense, não procuravam estabelecer uma definição abstrata e teórica acerca da democracia, mas, por meio da observação das experiências de sistemas políticos, estipularam alguns requisitos mínimos: funcionários eleitos, eleições livres justas e frequentes, liberdade de expressão, fontes de informação diversificadas, autonomia para associações e cidadania inclusiva. Com base nesses critérios são caracterizadas quatro estruturas de governo: hegemonias fechadas, que são regimes em que não há disputa de poder e a participação política é limitada; hegemonias inclusivas, regimes em que não há disputa de poder, mas ocorre participação política; oligarquias competitivas, regimes nos quais há disputa de poder, mas com limitada participação política; e poliarquias, regimes em que não há disputa de poder e participação política ampliada. Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950), economista austríaco, criticou as teorias clássicas de democracia, especialmente na relação estabelecida entre a democracia e a soberania popular7 . Para o autor, a definição clássica de democracia supõe duas ficções incapazes de resistir a uma análise realista: a existência do bem comum e a universalidade da racionalidade dos indivíduos. Para Schumpeter, a unidade da vontade geral, que constituiria o bem comum, e a racionalidade dos indivíduos seriam mitos, porque, para ele, esses elementos se tornaram irracionais por não conseguirem definir coerentemente suas preferências diante da influência da propaganda e de outros métodos de persuasão. Dessa forma, Schumpeter rompe com a ideia de democracia como soberania popular para propô-la como método, um tipo de arranjo institucional (de governos) para alcançar decisões políticas. Assim, sugere a superação do impedimento provocado pela irracionalidade das massas, reduzindo sua participação na política ao ato da produção de governos (ato de votar). As atribuições político-administrativas ficariam a cargo das elites eleitas. Essa é uma postura polêmica, na medida em que propõe uma redução da participação popular. Contrário a essa visão, o cientista político canadense C. B. Macpherson8 , sustenta que a liberdade e o desenvolvimento individual só podem ser alcançados plenamente com a participação direta e contínua dos cidadãos na regulação da sociedade e do Estado. Macpherson defende uma transformação estruturada em um sistema que combine partidos competitivos e organizações de democracia direta, que criam uma base real para a existência da democracia participativa. Mas, para que esse modelo pudesse se desenvolver, seria necessário que os partidos políticos se democratizassem, com princípios e procedimentos de democracia direta, complementada e controlada por organizações geridas por pessoas comuns, em seus locais de trabalho e nas comunidades locais. Na teoria das elites, o poder político pertence ao restrito círculo de pessoas que toma e impõem decisões a todos os membros que tenha de recorrer, como ação radical, à força. Ainda na doutrina liberal, mas opondo-se ao pluralismo, existem os elitistas, que utilizam o termo “elite” como referência a grupos sociais superiores de vários tipos. O termo seria empregado no pensamento social e político somente no final do século XIX. Essas teorias sociológicas, propostas pelos pensadores Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923), sociólogo e economista francês; Gaetano Mosca (1858-1941), cientista político italiano, e Robert Michels (1876-1936), sociólogo alemão radicado na Itália, defendem que em toda sociedade existe apenas uma minoria, que, por diversos motivos, vem a se tornar detentora do poder. Pareto afirmava que existe uma “circulação das elites”, ou seja, uma minoria de pessoas que se alternam no poder. Mosca justifica o poder das elites governamentais pelo fato de serem uma minoria articulada e organizada, enquanto os governos seriam uma classe numerosa, mas dividida e desorganizada. Ao estudar as formações partidárias, Michels destacou como a própria estrutura das organizações favorecia o surgimento das elites e sua longa permanência no poder. Nas palavras de Michels, essa estabilidade das elites no poder é a “lei de ferro das oligarquias”. Ao longo dos últimos séculos foram construídas diversas interpretações e teorias acerca dos objetivos e conteúdos da democracia. Na prática, a democracia pode ser um modelo de governo que amplia as capacidades de desenvolvimento social, político e econômico, com base em princípios de igualdade e cidadania, ou se tornar uma simples “regra” para formar governos que não priorizem necessariamente o atendimento das demandas sociais. FISIOLOGIA DA REPRODUÇÃO BOVINA -/- 3 – GESTAÇÃO -/- -/- INTRODUÇÃO -/- -/- O estabelecimento da gestação é o objetivo fundamental dos programas reprodutivos. Após a fertilização, o zigoto se divide e dá origem a embriões de duas, quatro, oito, dezesseis células, e no sétimo dia o embrião tem mais de 80 células. Entre os dias 16 e 18 do ciclo estral, o embrião se alonga e atinge 15 cm de comprimento. O estabelecimento da gestação depende da supressão da secreção (...) de PGF2α pelo embrião, que é realizada por meio da secreção de interferon-τ. Em vacas leiteiras, uma alta proporção de embriões morre antes do reconhecimento materno da gravidez. -/- Para evitar perdas embrionárias, é importante conhecer a fisiologia da gestação. Este capítulo descreve os principais processos fisiológicos que levam ao estabelecimento e manutenção da gestação e ao manejo da vaca prenhe. -/- -/- 3.1 Transporte de gametas -/- -/- Os gametas, óvulo e esperma, são definidos como células germinativas maduras que possuem um número haploide (n = 23) de cromossomos que, quando unidos, dão origem a um novo indivíduo geneticamente diferente de ambos os pais. -/- -/- 3.1.1 Transporte dos espermatozoides -/- -/- Os espermatozoides obtidos diretamente do testículo são funcionalmente imaturos, incapazes de fertilizar o óvulo. Durante sua permanência no epidídimo, os espermatozoides sofrem alterações na morfologia, mobilidade e metabolismo, o que lhes dá a capacidade de fertilização. No entanto, eles terão que passar algum tempo no trato genital feminino para que adquiram o estado ideal para fertilizar; processo conhecido como capacitação. -/- Durante a monta natural, a ejaculação ocorre na vagina e são depositados cerca de 5 x 109 de espermatozoides (volume ejaculado de três a cinco ml e concentração espermática de 1 x 109 a 1,2 x 109 por ml) suspensos no plasma seminal, este é basicamente constituído pelas secreções das vesículas seminais e da próstata. Após a ejaculação, o transporte dos espermatozoides é favorecido pelas contrações uterinas e vaginais que ocorrem durante e após a relação sexual. Nos primeiros minutos após a cópula, os espermatozoides já podem ser encontrados no oviduto, o que se deve às contrações do trato genital. Durante o transporte dos espermatozoides, a mobilidade individual é importante, já que apenas os espermatozoides com essa capacidade chegam ao local da fertilização. -/- O primeiro local para o estabelecimento de uma população de espermatozoides é a cérvix do útero, principalmente nas criptas, onde permanecem protegidos da fagocitose. É importante observar que apenas os espermatozoides móveis permanecem nas criptas; aqueles que estão mortos ou sem movimento são eliminados pelos fagócitos ou pelo movimento do muco cervical em direção a vagina. Embora uma população temporária de espermatozoides seja estabelecida no colo do útero, o reservatório funcional de espermatozoides está localizado na região distal do istmo. -/- As características do muco cervical são importantes para o transporte dos espermatozoides; assim, durante o estro e a ovulação, o muco fica mais aquoso, o que favorece a migração dos espermatozoides, enquanto na fase lútea o muco torna-se mais viscoso, dificultando sua movimentação. -/- Já no útero, o transporte de espermatozoides depende principalmente das contrações uterinas. Aqui, os espermatozoides ficam suspensos nas secreções uterinas, cuja função é promover sua viabilidade e transporte. As secreções uterinas contêm fagócitos que removem os espermatozoides mortos e imóveis, embora os espermatozoides normais também sejam removidos por esse meio. Algumas substâncias, como prostaglandinas e ocitocina, promovem o transporte. -/- O oviduto desempenha um papel muito importante no transporte e maturação dos gametas, bem como na fertilização e desenvolvimento embrionário inicial. As características das secreções do oviduto variam de acordo com a região do oviduto e o estágio do ciclo estral. Uma vez que os espermatozoides atingem o oviduto, eles são distribuídos em dois lugares. Alguns espermatozoides são imediatamente transportados para a região da ampola; esses são os primeiros que encontram o ovócito, mas sua capacidade de fertilização é limitada. O outro local de distribuição é a região caudal do istmo; aqui eles permanecem até que a ovulação seja iminente. Para que a fertilização ocorra, é necessário que o espermatozoide se estabeleça neste local por um período de seis a oito horas, antes da ovulação. Uma a duas horas, antes da ovulação, um movimento ativo do espermatozoide é observado em direção à região da ampola. -/- No oviduto, o transporte de espermatozoides depende de seu movimento, do fluido ovidutal e das contrações musculares. É comum que alguns espermatozoides continuem seu movimento e saiam pela fímbria. A viabilidade do espermatozoide de uma ejaculação varia de 24 a 48 horas. -/- -/- 3.1.2 Transporte do ovócito -/- -/- A ovulação é o processo pelo qual o ovócito é liberado. Este evento é desencadeado pela secreção de LH conhecida como pico de LH ovulatório ou pré-ovulatório. -/- Devido ao efeito de LH o cúmulos descola-se da parede folicular e começa a observar-se um adelgaçamento em uma pequena área da parede folicular, causada pela isquemia e pela ação de enzimas proteolíticas. Mais tarde, nesta área, uma pequena vesícula protuberante (estigma) se forma e eventualmente se quebra. Depois que o estigma é quebrado, o cúmulos que contém o ovócito junto com as células da granulosa. O ovócito é capturado pela fimbria; processo apoiado por movimentos dos cílios da mucosa e por contrações das pregas desta estrutura. Assim que o oócito é capturado, ele é transportado para a ampola. -/- 3.8 Manejo da vaca seca -/- -/- Em programas de manejo anteriores, a vaca seca recebia comida de pior qualidade e permanecia no esquecimento até o parto ocorrer. No entanto, os resultados dos estudos mostram que o período de seca é decisivo para que a vaca atinja um nível ótimo de produção e tenha um bom desempenho reprodutivo pós-parto. Por outro lado, o manejo correto no período seco reduz a incidência de doenças metabólicas no puerpério. O objetivo do período de seca é oferecer um descanso à vaca antes do parto, durante o qual o tecido mamário se regenera, o feto atinge seu crescimento máximo e a vaca atinge uma condição corporal adequada para enfrentar uma nova lactação. A duração recomendada do período de seca é de seis a oito semanas (60 dias). A involução do tecido da glândula mamária leva de duas a três semanas e um período semelhante é necessário para reiniciar a síntese do leite antes do parto. Assim, um período de seca de 60 dias é suficiente; entretanto, a duração desse período é questionada e tempos mais curtos foram propostos. Provavelmente, nos próximos anos, mais informações estarão disponíveis para apoiar a redução do período de seca. -/- Em termos de produção, o objetivo do manejo durante o período de seca é levar a vaca ao pico de lactação cinco a seis semanas após o parto, com produção máxima de leite. Estima-se que para cada kg de leite que aumenta no pico da lactação, ocorre um aumento de 120 kg ao longo da lactação. Para atingir este objetivo é necessário que a vaca tenha um consumo adequado de matéria seca após o parto; porém, três semanas antes do parto, a vaca reduz seu consumo em até 30%, para o qual é necessário estabelecer um manejo eficaz para promover um alto consumo de matéria seca durante a parte final do período de seca e durante as três primeiras semanas pós-parto (período de transição: três semanas antes e três após o parto). -/- A falta de capacidade de consumir as necessidades de matéria seca após o parto obriga a vaca a mobilizar suas reservas de gordura. Praticamente todas as vacas após o parto mobilizam suas reservas de gordura e perdem a condição corporal. A mobilização da gordura corporal causa degeneração gordurosa do fígado e é responsável por distúrbios metabólicos e retardo da atividade ovariana pós-parto. O grau de degeneração da gordura está relacionado à magnitude da mobilização da gordura corporal, que é diretamente dependente da capacidade de consumir matéria seca. Dessa forma, vacas com alto consumo de matéria seca no pós-parto, mobilizam menos gordura e, portanto, o dano ao fígado é menor. -/- O período de secagem é dividido em duas partes, a primeira compreende desde a secagem até duas semanas antes do parto; a segunda parte inclui as últimas duas semanas de gestação e é conhecida como período de desafio. -/- O período de desafio é decisivo para o desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo. Durante este período, uma dieta semelhante em ingredientes e forma deve ser oferecida à dieta que farão após o parto. Para facilitar esse manejo, as vacas deste grupo devem ser separadas do restante das vacas secas. -/- No período de seca, atenção especial deve ser dada para que as vacas não alcancem escores de condição corporal de quatro ou mais, uma vez que o excesso de gordura causa problemas metabólicos durante o puerpério, que afetam negativamente o comprometimento uterino e início da atividade ovariana pós-parto (figura 8). -/- -/- -/- Figura 8: Estágios fisiológicos e reprodutivos da vaca leiteira. Período de espera voluntário (PVE). -/- -/- 3.9 O período de transição -/- -/- O período de transição na vaca leiteira é três semanas antes e três após o parto (também conhecido como periparto). Nos últimos anos, esse tema tem merecido muitas pesquisas, pois o que for bem ou mal feito durante ele terá impacto na eficiência reprodutiva e na produção de leite. Durante o período de transição, a glândula mamária se prepara para a lactogênese, o feto cresce exponencialmente, a resposta imune é suprimida e o consumo de matéria seca diminui; além disso, o rúmen deve se adaptar à dieta recebida pelas vacas in natura (primeiras três semanas pós-parto), dieta caracterizada por alto teor de energia na forma de grãos. -/- Muitos distúrbios que se manifestam nas duas primeiras semanas pós-parto (hipocalcemia clínica e subclínica, cetose, retenção placentária, prolapso uterino, metrite, mastite, deslocamento do abomaso etc.), como os que se apresentam posteriormente (laminite, cistos ovarianos , endometrite e anestro) têm sua origem nos erros cometidos durante o período de transição. Em grande parte, os problemas estão relacionados à diminuição do consumo de matéria seca durante o período de transição; assim, o consumo diminui cerca de 30% durante as últimas três semanas de gestação, mas a maior parte da redução ocorre cinco a sete dias antes do parto. O manejo correto do período de transição tem como objetivo manter a normocalcemia, fortalecer o sistema imunológico, adaptar o rúmen a uma dieta rica em energia e aumentar a ingestão de matéria seca. Algumas recomendações gerais de manejo durante o período de transição são: separar as novilhas das vacas, ter comedouro suficiente para todos os animais, ter as mesmas características dos comedouros de vacas frescas e a dieta deve estar disponível 24 horas por dia (figuras 9 e 10). -/- -/- -/- Figura 10: O desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo das vacas depende em grande parte da condição corporal no momento do parto. A viabilidade dos espermatozoides no útero é de 24 a 48 horas. A polispermia é efetivamente bloqueada nas primeiras 10 horas após a ovulação. Os blastômeros de embriões de duas, quatro e oito células são pluripotentes. A eclosão do embrião ocorre no oitavo dia. O tempo que o embrião leva para chegar ao útero é de três a quatro dias. Entre os dias 16 e 18 do ciclo, o embrião produz interferon-t, para bloquear a secreção de PGF2α. Entre os dias 17 e 18, o embrião se fixa ao endométrio. A medição da progesterona entre os dias 20-24 pós-infecção é 100% precisa na identificação de vacas não gestantes. A vaca deve atingir seu pico de lactação entre cinco e seis semanas após o parto. Para cada kg de leite que é aumentado no pico da lactação, um aumento de 120 kg é alcançado na lactação de 305 dias. Três semanas antes do parto, a vaca reduz seu consumo em até 30%. O período de transição inclui três semanas antes e três após o parto. As vacas ao parto não devem ter mais do que quatro pontos de condição corporal. Michel Foucault’nun çalışmalarının merkezi noktalarından birisini, Batı kültüründe insanların, özneye dönüştürülmesinin tarihini ortaya çıkarmak oluşturmaktadır. Diğerini ise, özneye dönüştürme tekniklerine karşı verilen mücadeleler, çeşitli iktidar tekniklerinin dayattığı bireysellik ve kimlikten kurtulmanın, özgürleşmenin imkânı oluşturmaktadır. İnsanları, öznelere dönüştüren süreçleri bir bütün olarak ele almak yerine, çeşitli nesneleştirme kipleri üzerinden incelemenin daha akıllıca bir yol olduğunu düşünen Foucault, çalışmalarında insanı özneye dönüştüren üç ayrı nesneleştirme kipine yoğunlaşır. This article discusses the significance of historical research in normative political philosophy. Methodologically ahistoricist philosophers argue that historical research has limited relevance to political philosophy as it only serves to validate if a theory is sufficiently historically fact-sensitive. However, this perspective allows for minimal engagement with intellectual history. In contrast, I advocate for a more substantial role of historical research, suggesting that it not only provides evidence to refute political philosophical views but also serves as a source of imaginative resources. (...) I show that thinkers from across the humanities, like R.J. Collingwood, Quentin Skinner, Michel Foucault, Raymond Geuss, David Graeber, and Bernard Williams, have recognised the importance of these imaginative resources in shaping methodological reflections. These thinkers are concerned that limiting the relevance of history to normative theorising exposes ahistoricist thinkers to imaginative failures. I argue that this is best construed as a concern about the epistemic reliability of their evaluative judgments. Imaginative failures can introduce biases that unjustifiably restrict the range of solutions to practical collective problems they contemplate. Historical research serves a normative function that is unavailable to the methodologically ahistoricist approach by preventing such failures. (shrink)

The Repugnant Conclusion served an important purpose in catalyzing and inspiring the pioneering stage of population ethics research. We believe, however, that the Repugnant Conclusion now receives too much focus. Avoiding the Repugnant Conclusion should no longer be the central goal driving population ethics research, despite its importance to the fundamental accomplishments of the existing literature.

Researchers and practitioners are increasingly using machine‐generated synthetic data as a tool for advancing health science and practice, by expanding access to health data while—potentially—mitigating privacy and related ethical concerns around data sharing. While using synthetic data in this way holds promise, we argue that it also raises significant ethical, legal, and policy concerns, including persistent privacy and security problems, accuracy and reliability issues, worries about fairness and bias, and new regulatory challenges. The virtue of synthetic data is often understood (...) to be its detachment from the data subjects whose measurement data is used to generate it. However, we argue that addressing the ethical issues synthetic data raises might require bringing data subjects back into the picture, finding ways that researchers and data subjects can be more meaningfully engaged in the construction and evaluation of datasets and in the creation of institutional safeguards that promote responsible use. The following is a mock debate on schizophrenia set in the 1960s at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, between two fictional characters, Dr. Brian L. Zacou, a qualitative sociologist and Institute Professor Emeritus at the University of Prague; Dr. Wytt Thomas, a professor of psychology at Harvard University; two notable historical figures: Dr. Michel Foucault [20th-century philosopher, historian, academic and theorist] and Dr. R. D. Laing [20th-century psychiatrist and experimental researcher and author] and the writer of this compendium [artist and (...) writer Alexej Savreux; himself a diagnosed schizophrenic]. We model it as a transcription of a debate held at that juncture. It explores the historical framework of schizophrenia, the deep-seated aspects and reality of psychosis, a critique of psychiatry, and a sociological perspective on psychosis. We devote the first chapter to the historical framework and an explanation of the reality of schizophrenia. The second chapter is a critique of mainstream psychiatry, and the third chapter is a resolution between the mock debaters on the social framework and how best to come out unscathed in post-modernity. The remarks from Foucault and Laing are paraphrased from the works “Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason” (Foucault) and “The Divided Self: An Existential Study in Sanity and Madness” (Laing) and are annotated with footnotes along with a few other sources. The writer has taken great liberties in constructing this mock debate, including the usage of anachronisms, and also determines his findings based on what we refer to as the anti-symmetry underpinning the biopsychosocial reality of schizophrenia and the social framework that ensues, generated by popular responses to abstract disease concepts associated with insanity. NUTRIÇÃO SOBRE AS FALHAS REPRODUTIVAS DOS BOVINOS -/- E. I. C. da Silva Departamento de Agropecuária – IFPE Campus Belo Jardim Departamento de Zootecnia – UFRPE sede -/- -/- FALHAS REPRODUTIVAS DE BOVINOS -/- INTRODUÇÃO -/- Os bovinos, assim como tantos outros mamíferos e demais espécies, podem sofrer distúrbios durante o ciclo reprodutivo. Transtornos, alterações ou patogenias afetam diretamente a saúde do sistema reprodutor desses animais. As causas podem ser individuais ou multifatoriais, de caráter parasitário, patogênico, climático, nutricional etc. As (...) causas de caráter parasitário podem ser controladas mediante a assepsia e profilaxia para a eliminação dos parasitas como carrapatos que vivem no mesmo habitat que o animal. As de caráter patogênico, como estão relacionadas à doenças, necessitam de especialistas na área, como o médico-veterinário para a avaliação, diagnóstico e tratamento por meio de práticas cirúrgicas ou na administração de fármacos. O fator clima pode ser controlado mediante o investimento em tecnologia e aquisição de equipamentos que possam manter a integridade e o bem-estar do animal, seja por ventiladores, exaustores, nebulizadores, aspersores, etc. Por fim, as de caráter nutricional podem ser prevenidas mediante a boa administração energética, proteica e mineral, além de uma boa qualidade de alimento volumoso ou concentrado que atenda e supra os requerimentos exigidos por cada categoria animal. Sendo assim, pode-se dividir as falhas reprodutivas dos machos bovinos relacionados à nutrição em energia, proteína, minerais e vitaminas. Antes disso, essas falhas estão relacionadas aos fatores de degeneração testicular e casos de hipospermia. -/- 17.1 Degeneração testicular e Hipospermia -/- Degeneração testicular é uma importante causa de infertilidade em machos de todas as espécies. Entre as causas, podem ser consideradas a elevação da temperatura testicular (por isso torna-se importante que a bolsa escrotal tenha um certo tamanho que permita aos testículos ficarem longe do corpo, uma vez que a temperatura corporal mataria os espermatozoides, sendo essencial os testículos ficarem “caídos” para que possam ter no mínimo 2-3 °C à mesmos do que a temperatura corporal), infecções, fatores nutricionais, lesões vasculares, lesões obstrutivas etc. O testículo com degeneração mostra diminuição de tamanho, fibrose, alterações na espermatogênese, aumento de esperma imaturo ou anormal e azoospermia em casos severos. -/- Em casos de lesão testicular com dano parcial sobre o epitélio germinal, apresenta-se uma menor taxa de formação e maturação das células espermáticas. O macho pode ser fértil, mas a condição de hipospermia levará à que, sob condições de estresse ou alta carga de fêmeas a cobrir, se apresentem falhas na fertilização. Ejaculados com características de hipospermia não podem ser congelados, logo não servem para a indústria do sêmen. -/- -/- Deficiências nutricionais retardam o início da puberdade e deprimem a produção e as características do sêmen. Os efeitos da má nutrição podem ser corrigidos em animais maduros, enquanto que é menos bem sucedido em animais jovens devido aos danos permanentes causados no epitélio germinal do testículo. (FRAZER, 2005; GORDON, 1996). Entre as principais limitantes de origem nutricional temos: -/- 17.2 Vitaminas -/- 17.2.1 Vitamina A -/- A deficiência de vitamina A e provitamina A (já que é essencial direta ou indiretamente para a função de todos os órgãos e particularmente para o crescimento e desenvolvimento dos epitélios) é necessária para a diferenciação celular, processo no qual se modificam as células não especializadas de modo que possam realizar funções específicas. Os órgãos reprodutores exigem retinol para que possam realizar o processo de espermatogênese normal nos machos e para prevenir a necrose placentária e a mortalidade fetal na fêmea. Carências de Vitamina A produzem: degeneração do epitélio germinal, baixa espermiogênese parcial ou total, cornificação do epitélio vaginal, irregularidades do estro, atrasos na concepção, abortos, crias fracas e/ou deficientes visuais (cegas) e uma degeneração da placenta e a retenção da mesma. A deficiência da vitamina A pode conduzir a uma degeneração dos tubos seminíferos nos bovinos jovens e deve-se ao fato da supressão da liberação de gonadotropinas hipofisárias e noutros casos, a espermatogênese é impedida e as funções das células de Sertoli e de Leydig são alteradas. A vitamina A não é sintetizada no organismo, o que leva a uma dependência direta do fornecimento dessa vitamina através dos alimentos que o criador têm na propriedade, seja forragens ou concentrados de ótima qualidade. -/- Essa vitamina é essencial para os animais e humanos, visto que participa de inúmeras funções metabólicas no corpo dos mesmos. Sendo assim, o criador deve saber das exigências vitamínicas do seu rebanho. Em bovinos de corte a exigência e a recomendação de fornecimento dessa vitamina está entre 2200 UI/kg de MS para animais em crescimento e engorda e para reprodutores recomenda-se níveis de 3900 UI/kg de MS. Já para bovinos leiteiros esses números são diferentes, de acordo com livros de nutrição de ruminantes, animais em crescimento e engorda devem consumir matéria seca com teores de 80 UI/kg de MS, já para reprodutores e animais adultos a quantidade recomendada e exigida é de 110 UI/kg de MS, isso diariamente. As forragens suprem bem a exigência de vitamina A dos animais, em especial o capim tifton e o tanzânia são os mais recomendados uma vez que possuem altos teores vitamínicos e minerais. As vias de suplementação dessa vitamina é através das forragens (mais acessível e barato), através da ração concentrada ou pela água e suplementação injetável. -/- 17.2.2 Vitamina E -/- A vitamina E é uma substância também conhecida como tocoferol, sendo sua forma mais ativa o alfa tocoferol. A vitamina E pertence ao grupo de vitaminas lipossolúveis amplamente distribuídas nos alimentos. -/- A sua principal função é descrita como um antioxidante natural, agindo como tal, a vitamina E evita a oxidação de constituintes celulares essenciais e/ou evita a formação de produtos tóxicos de oxidação, como os produtos de peroxidação formados a partir de ácidos graxos insaturados que foram detectados através de sua ausência. Essa vitamina é essencial para a reprodução normal em várias espécies de mamíferos. Ela ainda têm sido usada em clínicas reprodutivas de todo o mundo para o tratamento de abortos recorrentes e da infertilidade em ambos os sexos (CHAN, 2003). -/- -/- A deficiência da vitamina E influencia a maturação espermática e a degeneração do epitélio germinal dos túbulos seminíferos, já que ela os protege da oxidação evitando a deterioração da peroxidase sobre os fosfolipídios poli-insaturados da membrana espermática (PITA RODRÍGUEZ, 1997). A deficiência dessa também evita o crescimento anormal. Na ausência de vitamina E, a quantidade de gorduras insaturadas dentro das células diminuem, causando anomalias estruturais e funcionais das organelas mitocondriais, lisossomos e até mesmo na membrana celular, se essa falta de vitamina E no adulto tornar-se acentuada ocorrerá a degeneração precoce do epitélio germinal, o que afeta, em primeiro lugar, as células mais evoluídas: os espermatozoides, cuja mobilidade se perde e sua formação torne-se cada vez mais rara, até chegar ao nível de esterilidade completa. -/- As exigências dos bovinos de corte quanto a vitamina em questão é de 15 – 60 UI/kg de MS diárias para animais em crescimento e engorda. Já para bovinos leiteiros, essa exigência é muito menor chegando a 0,8 UI/kg de peso vivo (PV) para animais em crescimento e engorda e para animais adultos e reprodutores cerca de 1,6 UI/kg de PV diários. Os alimentos, assim como as vias de suplementação ideais, são os mesmos mencionados no tópico acerca da vitamina A. -/- 17.3 Proteínas -/- O efeito do excesso de proteína da dieta na reprodução é complexo. Os excessos de proteína podem também ter um efeito negativo na reprodução. Alguns efeitos foram demonstrados para explicar o pobre desempenho reprodutivo que algumas vezes é observado em dietas com excessivos níveis de proteína: Podem apresentar-se altos níveis de ureia no sangue, o que possui efeito tóxico sobre os espermatozoides, óvulos, e o embrião em desenvolvimento (WATTIAUX, 1990), igualmente, apresenta-se um desequilíbrio energético que em casos severos bloqueia a liberação de LH produzindo alteração na maturação espermática nas células de Leyding. -/- As proteínas são importantes para todo o funcionamento normal e funções fisiológicas e metabólicas dos animais e do homem. Logo, a tabela 1 traz os níveis recomendados e exigências de bovinos de corte de diferentes categorias para que se possa prevenir e/ou combater as possíveis degenerações testiculares bem como a hipospermia, trazendo os requerimentos de bovinos leiteiros jovens o que é mais ideal para combater previamente esses distúrbios que afetam diretamente a função reprodutiva e o desemprenho dos animais. -/- Tabela 1: Exigências de proteína metabolizável (PM) e proteína bruta (PB), para diferentes categorias de bovinos de corte -/- BAIXE O PDF E VISUALIZE A TABELA -/- Para os bovinos leiteiros jovens, os níveis de PB presente na dieta dos animais entre 150 e 400 kg de PV podem ser entre 12 e 22%, o que é ideal para a prevenção de degenerações, atraso à puberdade ou qualquer anormalidade que afete o desempenho dos animais. -/- Os alimentos mais proteicos são os de origem animal, porém não se pode ofertá-los completamente e diretamente aos animais, isto é, deve-se misturá-los a outros ingredientes; logo, o tipo e a quantidade de proteína depende dos ingredientes, do método de alimentação e do potencial produtivo e genético dos animais. -/- 17.4 Minerais -/- 17.4.1 Manganês (Mn) -/- O manganês é um componente de várias enzimas e essencial para a estrutura óssea normal. Quando a alimentação é deficiente em Mn por algumas semanas, o corpo parece conservar este mineral de forma eficaz. -/- Numa dieta média, cerca de 45% do mineral ingerido é absorvido. A absorção pode ser diminuída com o consumo de quantidades excessivas de Ca, P ou Fe. Após a absorção, o Mn liga-se à sua proteína transportadora e é conhecido como transmanganina. Os ossos, e em menor quantidade o fígado, músculos, e pele servem como locais de armazenamento desse mineral. -/- O Mn está envolvido na função pancreática e na utilização correta da glicose, sendo também um interveniente ativo na produção de tiroxina e de hormonas sexuais. Tem importância na produção do colesterol e no metabolismo de gorduras. -/- O Mn é um mineral de grande afinidade com o aparelho reprodutor. A deficiência desse elemento produz uma diminuição da fertilidade, atraso no desenvolvimento testicular e diminuição da espermatogênese. Se houver atrofia dos testículos, a produção de espermatozoides será reduzida e, portanto, a fertilidade será afetada. -/- A quantidade de 13 mg de Mn por kg de MS é suficiente para a obtenção de um crescimento adequado, mas para um crescimento testicular ideal e constante é necessário um mínimo de 16 mg de Mn por kg de MS. -/- Para uma boa suplementação que atenda às necessidades do gado de corte e leite, o nível ideal de Mn presente na MS em mg/kg deve estar entre 12 – 18 para os bovinos leiteiros e entre 20 – 50 para o gado de corte, tendo como recomendação ideal cerca de 40 mg/kg de MS diários para ambos. Esse mineral pode estar presente tanto na água quanto nas plantas presentes no pasto, portanto a suplementação natural é a melhor escolha, caso necessário a suplementação artificial através da ração no cocho ou do sistema SMI é recomendada. -/- 17.4.2 Iodo (I) -/- A deficiência de I também ocasionar dificuldades reprodutivas e hipospermia. Só a captação da tiroide responde à TSH, e somente a glândula endócrina tiroide incorpora esse elemento nos hormônios que são por ela elaborados. Assim, mais de 90% do iodo do organismo é encontrado nas glândulas tireóideas, principalmente como iodo orgânico. Este grande acúmulo de I na glândula é trocado muito lentamente, cerca de 1% por dia. -/- O I entra no organismo via oral e sob a forma de íon iodeto, absorvendo-se muito facilmente desde o aparelho digestivo e passando rapidamente à corrente circulatória e, posteriormente à glândula tiroide (ALBARRACÍN, 2005) onde tem que vencer um gradiente de concentração de 1 a 20; todavia, dada a afinidade entre essa glândula e o iodo, não existe nenhum problema na organização. This study aims to investigate the relationship between job burnout and employee performance in the feed industry during the ASF outbreak. Further, the researchers employed a descriptive-correlational research design in order to analyze the acquired data and produce pertinent findings. Thus, the researchers gathered data from one hundred two (102) feed industry employees. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Individual Work Performance Questionnaire (IWPQ) were employed to ascertain the extent of job burnout experienced by the respondents and evaluate employee performance, (...) respectively. It is often assumed that adaptation — a temporary change in sensitivity to a perceptual dimension following exposure to that dimension — is a litmus test for what is and is not a “primary visual attribute”. Thus, papers purporting to find evidence of number adaptation motivate a claim of great philosophical significance: That number is something that can be seen in much the way that canonical visual features, like color, contrast, size, and speed, can. Fifteen years after its reported discovery, (...) number adaptation’s existence seems to be nearly undisputed, with dozens of papers documenting support for the phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to offer a counterweight — to critically assess the evidence for and against number adaptation. After surveying the many reasons for thinking that number adaptation exists, we introduce several lesser-known reasons to be skeptical. We then advance an alternative account — the old news hypothesis — which can accommodate previously published findings while explaining various (otherwise unexplained) anomalies in the existing literature. Next, we describe the results of eight pre-registered experiments which pit our novel old news hypothesis against the received number adaptation hypothesis. Collectively, the results of these experiments undermine the number adaptation hypothesis on several fronts, whilst consistently supporting the old news hypothesis. More broadly our work raises questions about the status of adaptation itself as a means of discerning what is and is not a visual attribute. (shrink)

An increasing number of financial services (FS) companies are adopting solutions driven by artificial intelligence (AI) to gain operational efficiencies, derive strategic insights, and improve customer engagement. However, the rate of adoption has been low, in part due to the apprehension around its complexity and self-learning capability, which makes auditability a challenge in a highly regulated industry. There is limited literature on how FS companies can implement the governance and controls specific to AI-driven solutions. AI auditing cannot be performed in (...) a vacuum; the risks are not confined to the algorithm itself, but rather permeates the entire organization. Using the risk of unfairness as an example, this paper will introduce the overarching governance strategy and control framework to address the practical challenges in mitigating risks AI introduces. With regulatory implications and industry use cases, this framework will enable leaders to innovate with confidence. (shrink)

Staff reported paranormal experiences in connection with the outpatient Medical Assistance in Dying room at the hospital. This case study reports on staff experiences and illustrates how the Ethics team’s role expanded to deal with this novel situation by facilitating an interdisciplinary response.

Human resource management (HRM) education has tended to focus on specific functions and tasks within organizations, such as compensation, staffing, and evaluation. This task orientation within HRM education fails to account for the bigger questions facing human resource management and employment relationships, questions which address the roles and responsibilities of the HR function and HR practitioners. An educational focus on HRM that does not explicitly address larger ethical questions fails to equip students to address stakeholder concerns about how employees are (...) treated or the ethical dilemmas facing employers with regard to the employment relationship, and ironically makes the HRM function less strategic to the organization. In this paper, we identify some of the key ethical issues within the employment relationship, discuss how extant HRM education often fails to address these issues or help students to become aware of them, and offer a framework for integrating ethics into HRM education. In this paper I interrogate the notion of `debunking conspiracy theories’, arguing that the term `debunk’ carries with it pejorative implications, given that the verb `to debunk’ is commonly understood as `to show the wrongness of a thing or concept’. As such, the notion of `debunking conspiracy theories’ builds in the notion that such theories are not just wrong but ought to be shown as being wrong. I argue that we should avoid the term `debunk’ and focus on investigating conspiracy (...) theories. Looking at recent research work in epistemology on conspiracy theory, I argue that the best way to avoid talk of `debunking’ conspiracy theories is by working with a non-pejorative definition of `conspiracy theory’, and forming communities of inquiry which allow us to investigate the warrant of such theories without the prejudice associated with working with a pejorative definition. Judging the warrant of conspiracy theories can be difficult, and often we rely upon what the experts tell us when it comes to assessing whether particular conspiracy theories ought to be believed. However, whereas there are recognised experts in the sciences, I argue that only are is no such associated expertise when it comes to the things we call `conspiracy theories,' but that the conspiracy theorist has good reason to be suspicious of the role of expert endorsements when it comes (...) to conspiracy theories and their rivals. The kind of expertise, then, we might associate with conspiracy theories is largely improvised—in that it lacks institutional features—and, I argue, ideally the product of a community of inquiry. This article investigates the claim that some truths are fundamentally or really true — and that other truths are not. Such a distinction can help us reconcile radically minimal metaphysical views with the verities of common sense. I develop an understanding of the distinction whereby Fundamentality is not itself a metaphysical distinction, but rather a device that must be presupposed to express metaphysical distinctions. Drawing on recent work by Rayo on anti-Quinean theories of ontological commitments, I formulate a rigourous theory (...) of the notion. In the final sections, I show how this package dovetails with ' interpretationist' theories of meaning to give sober content to thought that some things — perhaps sets, or gerrymandered mereological sums — can be 'postulated into existence'. This paper examines two puzzles of indeterminacy. The first puzzle concerns the hypothesis that there is a unified phenomenon of indeterminacy. How are we to reconcile this with the apparent diversity of reactions that indeterminacy prompts? The second puzzle focuses narrowly on borderline cases of vague predicates. How are we to account for the lack of theoretical consensus about what the proper reaction to borderline cases is? I suggest (building on work by Maudlin) that the characteristic feature of indeterminacy is (...) alethic normative silence, and use this to explain both plurality and lack of consensus. (shrink)

In the literature on supervaluationism, a central source of concern has been the acceptability, or otherwise, of its alleged logical revisionism. I attack the presupposition of this debate: arguing that when properly construed, there is no sense in which supervaluational consequence is revisionary. I provide new considerations supporting the claim that the supervaluational consequence should be characterized in a ‘global’ way. But pace Williamson (1994) and Keefe (2000), I argue that supervaluationism does not give rise to counterexamples to familiar inference-patterns (...) such as reductio and conditional proof. Does the visual system adapt to number? For more than fifteen years, most have assumed that the answer is an unambiguous “yes”. Against this prevailing orthodoxy, we recently took a critical look at the phenomenon, questioning its existence on both empirical and theoretical grounds, and providing an alternative explanation for extant results (the old news hypothesis). We subsequently received two critical responses. Burr, Anobile, and Arrighi rejected our critiques wholesale, arguing that the evidence for number adaptation remains overwhelming. Durgin questioned (...) our old news hypothesis — preferring instead a theory about density adaptation he has championed for decades — but also highlighted several ways in which our arguments do pose serious challenges for proponents of number adaptation. Here, we reply to both. We first clarify our position regarding number adaptation. Then, we respond to our critics’ concerns, highlighting seven reasons why we remain skeptical about number adaptation. We conclude with some thoughts about where the debate may head from here. We discuss arguments against the thesis that the world itself can be vague. The first section of the paper distinguishes dialectically effective from ineffective arguments against metaphysical vagueness. The second section constructs an argument against metaphysical vagueness that promises to be of the dialectically effective sort: an argument against objects with vague parts. Firstly, cases of vague parthood commit one to cases of vague identity. But we argue that Evans' famous argument against will not on its own enable one to (...) complete the reductio in the present context. We provide a metaphysical premise that would complete the reductio, but note that it seems deniable. We conclude by drawing general morals from our case study. (shrink)

Information can be public among a group. Whether or not information is public matters, for example, for accounts of interdependent rational choice, of communication, and of joint intention. A standard analysis of public information identifies it with (some variant of) common belief. The latter notion is stipulatively defined as an infinite conjunction: for p to be commonly believed is for it to believed by all members of a group, for all members to believe that all members believe it, and so (...) forth. This analysis is often presupposed without much argument in philosophy. Theoretical entrenchment or intuitions about cases might give some traction on the question, but give little insight about why the identification holds, if it does. The strategy of this paper is to characterize a practical-normative role for information being public, and show that the only things that play that role are (variants of) common belief as stipulatively characterized. In more detail: a functional role for “taking a proposition for granted” in non-isolated decision making is characterized. I then present some minimal conditions under which such an attitude is correctly held. The key assumption links this attitude to beliefs about what is public. From minimal a priori principles, we can argue that a proposition being public among a group entails common commitment to believe among that group. Later sections explore partial converses to this result, the factivity of publicity and publicity from the perspective of outsiders to the group, and objections to the aprioricity of the result deriving from a posteriori existential presuppositions. Adam Smith is respected as the father of contemporary economics for his work on systemizing classical economics as an independent field of study in The Wealth of Nations. But he was also a significant moral philosopher of the Scottish Enlightenment, with its characteristic concern for integrating sentiments and rationality. This article considers Adam Smith as a key moral philosopher of commercial society whose critical reflection upon the particular ethical challenges posed by the new pressures and possibilities of commercial society remains (...) relevant today. The discussion has three parts. First I address the artificial separation between self-interest and morality often attributed to Smith, in which his work on economics is stripped of its ethical context. Second I outline Smith’s ethical approach to economics, focusing on his vigorous but qualified defence of commercial society for its contributions to prosperity, justice, and freedom. Third I outline Smith’s moral philosophy proper as combining a naturalistic account of moral psychology with a virtue ethics based on propriety in commercial society. (shrink)

I’m to push back on Hill’s (2022) criticism in four ways. First: we need some context for the debate that occurred in the pages of the Social Epistemology Review and Reply Collective that so concerns Hill. Second: getting precise with our terminology (and not working with stereotypes) is the only theoretically fruitful way to approach the problem of conspiracy theories. Third: I address Hill’s claim there is no evidence George W. Bush or Tony Blair accused their critics, during the build-up (...) the invasion of Iraq in 2003ACE, as being “conspiracy theorists.” Fourth (and finally): I will gently suggest that Hill has succumbed to a stereotypical view of work in Philosophy on conspiracy theories. This article examines how Quine and Sellars develop informatively contrasting responses to a fundamental tension in Carnap’s semantics ca. 1950. Quine’s philosophy could well be styled ‘Essays in Radical Empiricism’; his assay of radical empiricism is invaluable for what it reveals about the inherent limits of empiricism. Careful examination shows that Quine’s criticism of Carnap’s semantics in ‘Two Dogmas of Empiricism’ fails, that at its core Quine’s semantics is for two key reasons incoherent and that his hallmark Thesis of Extensionalism (...) is untenable. The tension in Carnap’s semantics together with Quine’s exposure of the severe limits of radical empiricism illuminate central features of Sellars’s philosophy: the fully general form of the myth of givenness, together with Sellars’s alternative Kantian characterisation of understanding; the full significance of Carnap’s distinction between conceptual analysis and conceptual explication, and its important methodological implications; the specifically pragmatic character of Sellars’s realism; and Sellars’s methodological reasons for holding that philosophy must be systematic and that systematic philosophy must be deeply historically and textually informed. This paper thus re-examines this recent episode of philosophical history for its philosophical benefits and systematic insights. (shrink)

The selected effects or ‘etiological’ theory of Proper function is a naturalistic and realist account of biological teleology. It is used to analyse normativity in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of medicine and elsewhere. The theory has been developed with a simple and intuitive view of natural selection. Traits are selected because of their positive effects on the fitness of the organisms that have them. These ‘selected effects’ are the Proper functions of the traits. Proponents argue that this (...) analysis of biological teleology has the unique advantage that the selected effect function of a trait is also a causal explanation of the trait: the trait exists because it performs this function. We show, however, that selected effect functions as currently defined explain the existence of traits only under highly restrictive assumptions about evolutionary dynamics. In many common scenarios in which traits evolve by natural selection, selected effect functions do not explain those traits. This is because definitions of selected effect function extract from any evolutionary scenario only the information that would be explanatorily relevant in the simple evolutionary scenario implicit in those definitions. When applied to more complex scenarios selected effect functions omit the key information that is explanatorily relevant in those scenarios. The assumptions required for selected effect functions to be explanatory are particularly unlikely to hold in the domain that its proponents care most about - the evolution of representation. A more adequate selected effects theory of Proper functions may be possible, but will require much greater attention to the structure of actual evolutionary explanations. (shrink)

This paper outlines Lewis’s favoured foundational account of linguistic representation, and outlines and briefly evaluates variations and modifications. Section 1 gives an opinionated exegesis of Lewis’ work on the foundations of reference—his interpretationism. I look at the way that the metaphysical distinction between natural and non-natural properties came to play a central role in his thinking about language. Lewis’s own deployment of this notion has implausible commitments, so in section 2 I consider variations and alternatives. After reviewing Kant’s well-known criticisms of the traditional proofs of God’s existence and his preferred moral argument, this paper presents a detailedanalysis of a densely-packed theistic argument in Religion within the Bounds of Bare Reason. Humanity’s ultimate moral destiny can be fulfilled only through organized religion, for only by participating in a religious community (or “church”) can we overcome the evil in human nature. Yet we cannot conceive how such a community can even be founded without presupposing God’s existence. Viewing (...) God as the internal moral lawgiver, empowering a community of believers, is Kant’s ultimate rationale for theistic belief. (shrink)

A fiction may prescribe imagining that a pig can talk or tell the future. A fiction may prescribe imagining that torturing innocent persons is a good thing. We generally comply with imaginative prescriptions like the former, but not always with prescriptions like the latter: we imagine non-evaluative fictions without difficulty but sometimes resist imagining value-rich fictions. Thus arises the puzzle of imaginative resistance. Most analyses of the phenomenon focus on the content of the relevant imaginings. The present analysis focuses instead (...) on the character of certain kinds of imaginings, arguing that we resist in such cases given the rich evaluative character of the imaginings prescribed, and the agent-dependent constraints on imagining in such ways. Because corporate social responsibility can be beneficial to both companies and its stakeholders, interest in factors that support CSR performance has grown in recent years. A thorough integration of CSR in core business processes is particularly important for achieving effective long-term CSR practices. Here, we explored the individual CSR-related competencies that support CSR implementation in a corporate context. First, a systematic literature review was performed in which relevant scientific articles were identified and analyzed. Next, 28 CSR directors and managers were (...) interviewed. The literature review complemented with interview data resulted in the following eight distinct CSR-related competencies: Anticipating CSR challenges; Understanding CSR-relevant systems and subsystems; Understanding CSR-relevant standards; CSR management competencies, including Leading CSR programs, Managing CSR programs, and Identifying and realizing CSR-related business opportunities; Realizing CSR-supportive interpersonal processes; Employing CSR-supportive personal characteristics and attitudes; Personal value-driven competencies, including Ethical normative competencies, Balancing personal ethical values and business objectives, and Realizing self-regulated CSR-related behaviors and active involvement; and Reflecting on personal CSR views and experiences. The visual system adapts to a wide range of visual features, from lower-level features like color and motion to higher-level features like causality and, perhaps, number. According to some, adaptation is a strictly perceptual phenomenon, such that the presence of adaptation licenses the claim that a feature is truly perceptual in nature. Given the theoretical importance of claims about adaptation, then, it is important to understand exactly when the visual system does and does not exhibit adaptation. Here, we take as (...) a case study one specific kind of adaptation: visual adaptation to size. Supported by evidence from four experiments, we argue that, despite robust effects of size adaptation in the lab, (1) size adaptation effects are phenomenologically underwhelming (in some cases, hardly appreciable at all), (2) some effects of size adaptation appear contradictory, and difficult to explain given current theories of size adaptation, and (3) prior studies on size adaptation may have failed to isolate size as the adapted dimension. Ultimately, we argue that while there is evidence to license the claim that size adaptation is genuine, size adaptation is a puzzling and poorly understood phenomenon. (shrink)

Alan Turing, one of the fathers of computing, warned that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could one day pose an existential risk to humanity. Today, recent advancements in the field AI have been accompanied by a renewed set of existential warnings. But what exactly constitutes an existential risk? And how exactly does AI pose such a threat? In this chapter we aim to answer these questions. In particular, we will critically explore three commonly cited reasons for thinking that AI poses an existential (...) threat to humanity: the control problem, the possibility of global disruption from an AI race dynamic, and the weaponization of AI. This paper addresses several questions related to the nature, production, and use of animal-human (a-h) chimeras. At the heart of the issue is whether certain types of a-h chimeras should be brought into existence, and, if they are, how we should treat such creatures. In our current research environment, we recognize a dichotomy between research involving nonhuman animal subjects and research involving human subjects, and the classification of a research protocol into one of these categories will trigger different ethical standards (...) as to the moral permissibility of the research in question. Are a-h chimeras entitled to the more restrictive and protective ethical standards applied to human research subjects? We elucidate an Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysical framework in which to argue how such chimeras ought to be defined ontologically. We then examine when the creation of, and experimentation upon, certain types of a-h chimeras may be morally permissible. (shrink)

It appears that spouses have less reason to hold each other to a norm of monogamy than to reject the norm. The norm of monogamy involves a restriction of spouses' aeeess to two things of value: sex and erotic love. This restriction initially appears unwarranted but can be justified. There is reason for spouses to aeeept the norm of monogamy if their marriage satisfies three conditions. Otherwise, there is reason to permit non-monogamy. Some spouses have reason to accept the norm (...) of monogamy because this will avoid reasonable hurt and prevent diversion of resourees needed to sustain the marriage. Other spouses have reason to permit non-monogamy to allow the spouses access to aspects of a well-rounded life. Commentators such as Terence Irwin (1999) and Christopher Shields (2006) claim that the Ring of Gyges argument in Republic II cannot demonstrate that justice is chosen only for its consequences. This is because valuing justice for its own sake is compatible with judging its value to be overridable. Through examination of the rational commitments involved in valuing normative ideals such as justice, we aim to show that this analysis is mistaken. If Glaucon is right that everyone would endorse Gyges’ behavior, (...) it follows that nobody values justice intrinsically. The paper explores the handling of singular analogy in quantitative inductive logics. It concentrates on two analogical patterns coextensive with the traditional argument from analogy: perfect and imperfect analogy. Each is examined within Carnap’s λ-continuum, Carnap’s and Stegmüller’s λ-η continuum, Carnap’s Basic System, Hintikka’s α-λ continuum, and Hintikka’s and Niiniluoto’s K-dimensional system. Itis argued that these logics handle perfect analogies with ease, and that imperfect analogies, while unmanageable in some logics, are quite manageable in others. Since late antiquity, a connection was made between Jews and the psychological state of despondency based, in part, on the link between melancholy and Saturn, and the further association of the Hebrew name of that planet, Shabbetai, and the Sabbath. The melancholic predisposition has had important anthropological, cosmological, and theological repercussions. In this essay, I focus on various perspectives on melancholia in thinkers as diverse as Kafka, Levinas, Blanchot, Rosenzweig, Benjamin, Bloch, Scholem, and Derrida. Kants theories of both general moral decision-making and specifically religious conversion. It is argued that Kantian Gesinnung is volitional, referring to a personconvictionberzeugung (). This is confirmed by a detailed analysis of the 169 occurrences of Gesinnung and cognate words in Religion. It contrasts with what is suggested by translating Gesinnung as, which reinforces a tendency to interpret the notion more metaphysically, and also with Pluharattitude’, which has too strongly psychological connotations.
